Since 2021, our Biophony series has employed 650 musicians and composers bringing 43 original commissions to 125 New York City locations for over 30,000 audience participants.

 

Our groundbreaking Dolby Atmos debut, The Blind Banister—featuring pianist Timo Andres and cellist Inbal Segev—earned a 2025 GRAMMY Award nomination for Best Engineered Album.

 

Avant-garde jazz icon, Roscoe Mitchell’s new Metropolis Ensemble co-commissioned work, Metropolis Trilogy, will premiere at Houston’s DaCamera in 2025.

Over the past year, Metropolis Ensemble released five ground-breaking studio productions, creating once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to reach expanded audiences.

(Timo Andres) 2024 Editor’s Choice for Gramophone and NPR; nominated for the 2025 GRAMMY Awards (Best Engineered Album) with Silas Brown and Matt Colton.

(Ricardo Romaneiro) 118 artists from Metropolis (Andrew Cyr, conductor) and The Crossing (Donald Nally, chorus master) combine for Cosm’s new immersive domes in Los Angeles and Dallas.

(Wye Oak) Celebrating the 10th anniverary of Wye Oak’s popular album, Shriek, reimagined by composer William Brittelle, Paul Wiancko, and Metropolis.

(William Brittelle) Developed and recorded remotely during the pandemic with Jenn Wasner, Holland Andrews, and Eliza Bagg.

(Molly Joyce) A mixed-media project focussing on accessibility produced by Metropolis with Molly Joyce, Andrew Cyr, and Sandbox Percussion.

In June 2024, thousands of people attended Biophony Solstice at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, where sunrise and sunset concerts featured pianist Erik Hall, Sandbox Percussion, 52 percussionists, and Metropolis Ensemble artists.

 
 
 

Since 2021, our Flame Keepers live-streaming perpetual sonic art installation commissioned 140+ composers from around the world who have created over 4,000 musical stems.

 

Metropolis Ensemble is preparing for the New York Premiere of “In A Grove” in January 2025 at the Prototype Opera Festival, “a vividly immersive thriller” (NYTimes).

Liquidverse, an immersive audiovisual symphony by composer and electronic artist Ricardo Romaneiro, was developed, produced, and recorded in collaboration with Metropolis Ensemble. Now playing at Cosm LA and Cosm Dallas—home to the world’s first 87-foot, 12K LED domes—this groundbreaking experience redefines the intersection of music, technology, and visual art.

 
 
 

Since 2010, our studio recordings have received international recognition including Grammy and Opus Klassik nominations, a Juno award, and New York Times albums of the year.

 

Metropolis and pianist Han Chen commissioned a diverse cohort of 18 world premieres inspired by Ligeti’s piano études for Infinite Staircase, a sold-out, critically-acclaimed recital at National Sawdust.

In 2024, Biophony Pop-Up NYC expanded access to the arts in 20 pedestrian plazas, public parks, and open streets with 89 musicians, reaching over 3,000 audience participants.

Over the years, our education program has delivered music to thousands of middle schoolers across 32 NYC public and charter schools.
