Pianist Julia Hamos performs all four of Frédéric Chopin’s Mazurkas, Op. 17 for this edition of the House Music series. The pieces, composed in the early 1830s, exemplify the light, buoyant dance style of the mazurka, but each plays with a different color: Some feel more vibrant and boisterous, while others feel more poignant and subdued. In 2019, Hamos worked with Metropolis through their collaboration with Erika Dohi and Daniel Anastasio’s PIANO BLUEPRINTS series at the Ensemble’s performance space 1 Rivington. The series united pianists working across musical genres, where she performed alongside Han Chen, Katie Hyun, Bixby Kennedy, Nicolas Namoradze, and Conor Hanick. Here, her delicate performance highlights the music’s fluidity, gently bringing out the subtle in color and tone as she shifts between each of the four works, deftly enveloping us in Chopin’s dreamy sounds. — Vanessa Ague
