Wonderfully controlled and poised performance by cellist Inbal Segev in Upstate Obscura, Metropolis Ensemble under conductor Andrew Cyr in full control throughout, and the irrepressible Andres on top of his game in The Blind Banister and the solo piano piece Colorful History, I cannot recommend this album highly enough.

What follows is a mix of gently melancholic classical music led by stringed instruments, featuring Timo Andres’ Upstate Obscura.

Nonesuch releases composer Timo Andres’ new studio album, The Blind Banister, on March 22, 2024 featuring pianist Timo Andres, cellist Inbal Segev, and Metropolis Ensemble conducted by Andrew Cyr.
Timo Andres’ piece, which features the cellist Inbal Segev performing with the Metropolis Ensemble, is based on John Vanderlyn’s “Panoramic View of the Palace and Gardens of Versailles” (1818-19), a massive painting on nearly 2,000 square feet of canvas that requires its own circular gallery in the Met’s American Wing.
Inbal recommends the panoramic installation at the Metropolitan Museum of Art that inspired composer Timo Andres to write a new cello concerto.
